"If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples, then you and I still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas." - George Bernard Shaw

George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 - 2 November 1950) was an Irish playwright. Although his first profitable writing was music and literary criticism, his talent was for drama, and he wrote more than 60 plays. He is the only person to have been awarded both the Nobel Prize for Literature (1925) and an Oscar (1938).

Version 4.3 of AutoVu, our advanced IP license plate recognition (LPR) solution, has just been released and is now available for purchase. The new features and functionalities of AutoVu 4.3 have been designed to enhance users' experience and facilitate everyday LPR applications. Here are just some additions that were implemented in the latest version of AutoVu:

AutoVu IP License Plate Recognition (LPR) Logo
  1. Real-Time Alarming and Email Notification: When data is transferred from the in-vehicle software to the back-office software in real time, the back-office system will automatically generate an alarm for matched license plates, known as hits. It will also automatically send an email notification to assigned recipients. Managers are then aware of officers in the field that have encountered a vehicle of interest and may offer support or back up.

  2. Color, Sound and Priority Assignment: Users with AutoVu 4.3 can now configure hotlist hits so that they are associated with specific interface colors, alarm sounds and order of priority, to easily identify the type of hit and its importance.

  3. Enhanced Hit Metadata Search: AutoVu 4.3 offers in-depth data-mining capabilities to conduct searches through hits which are not only based on license plates, but also based on the additional data inputted to the hotlist such as vehicle identification number (VIN), model, year, color, etc., from the back-office system.

  4. Wildcard Hotlists: Operators can now use AutoVu to create Wildcard Hotlist databases that are based only on a portion of a license plate number. As witnesses do not always remember full license plates of potential suspects involved in a crime, using the Wildcard Hotlist means that AutoVu will alert users of all potential license plate matches associated with a crime, even if the full license plate was not identified.

  5. Anti-Tampering Features: Both encrypted offload and water marking functionalities are now available in this new version of AutoVu for increased tamper protection and chain of custody validation during transfer and exchange.

Utility Security Challenges
by Terry Oden

Through his story, Oden, Security Manager at Birmingham Water Works in Alabama, recants how he assessed the susceptibility of Birmingham's water district to threats, and which recommendations he made to reduce potential risks, such as vandalism or even terrorist attacks. With a large privately-funded budget and a carte blanche, he further describes how Birmingham Water Works is now one of the most secured water utility organizations in North America. In the recent release of Omnicast 4.4, a plugin for the AutoVu Sharp, Genetec's License Plate Recognition (LPR) camera, was announced. With an existing Omnicast 4.4 system, AutoVu Sharp cameras are installed and configured in the video management system in the exact same way as the initial installation with any regular IP camera connection.

AutoVu Sharp captures the plate and reads the license plate number, and Omnicast retrieves and stores the license plate number, comparing it against designated databases and generating alerts based on matches. Omnicast then displays and records the video/images from the AutoVu Sharp and takes action based on the matching.

In many respects, the integration is similar to that of access control and video surveillance. Vehicle plate reads from the Sharp camera can be indexed to correlating video feeds from standard analog or IP cameras in the surrounding environment. These feeds are displayed to the operator in conjunction with a license plate reading in Omnicast. Additionally, if one does a search in the archive for a specific license plate number, all correlated video feeds will be available for viewing in a matter of moments. What the integration ultimately provides is more qualified video data, significant time savings for the end user, and of course, savings of costs associated with that banked time.
