Think Differently

Communications in security control room

Communications Are A Critical Aspect of Security

Working with separate physical security and communications systems can pose many challenges when operators have to respond to an unforeseen threat or an emergency call. Taking steps to make communications management an essential component of your strategy will lead to a more comprehensive approach to security. Merging communications with your physical security applications gives your operators another stream of information that intuitively complements the physical security data from your video, access control, and intrusion systems.

The Pitfalls of Proprietary Communications

When deploying a new phone system, organizations tend to choose open solutions, like IP phones built on VoIP and SIP standards. That said, many organizations continue to rely on proprietary intercom solutions. Deploying proprietary intercom systems limits how organizations can evolve their communications strategy over time. By adopting SIP-based devices, one is able to take better advantage of existing IP networks, reduce installation costs, and open up new possibilities such as linking their SIP-based intercom devices with their existing IP-based phone and security systems.

Enhancing Collaboration

While video conferencing has become quite common at home and at the office, this form of video-enabled interaction is generally missing in the security space. When an organization relies on several communications tools (smart phones, mobile apps, work phones, workstation apps), operators will usually be less efficient when responding to incidents. Video-enabled communications embedded within security apps give operators the ability to respond to incidents while collaborating with peers, all within a single security and communication application.

Sample Applications

Emergency Call Management

Whether securing a single building or ensuring the safety a town center, you can use emergency call station integration with video to better manage emergency calls. Your staff can answer incoming emergency calls, view live video while responding, and take the right action to address situations as they arise.

Parking Entrance Control

Whether you control access to your parking lot or car park entrance using access control readers or license plate recognition, your team can respond to incoming requests for assistance and manually open parking gates and doors from a single user application.

Employee Lost Card Situations

Intercom call stations linked to access controlled doors and video cameras streamline how operators respond to employee lost card requests. Accept incoming calls, confirm caller identity through live video and cardholder profile, and grant access from the Security Center user application.

Embedded SIP Server

With a fully embedded SIP engine, the Sipelia™ communications server uniquely manages SIP-enabled edge devices, including intercom stations and intercom exchange servers. The Sipelia server routes all calls and allows for optional recording and playback of video calls. Using SIP, you can also deploy a variety of standards-based devices from Commend, Zenitel, Code Blue, Castel, and Axis.

Available capabilities

  • Unified communications with access control, video, ALPR, intrusion, and other security applications
  • Connects to 3rd party SIP-enabled door stations, master stations, exchange servers, and mobile apps
  • Manages all communications using the SIP protocol, including the configuration of SIP Trunks
  • Manages call queues and routes calls to individual users or a ring group with multiple recipients
  • Optionally records call sessions linked to video

Full Call Management

Operators can initiate, answer, and forward calls with a built-in call dialog in the same unified application that allows them to manage their access control, video, and ALPR systems. Incoming calls from door stations associated to cameras and readers dynamically give operators access to commands for camera and door control. A customizable phone book, recent calls list, and dial pad further enhance the experience, allowing operators to call other operators or remote intercom door stations.

Available capabilities

  • Embedded Call dialog within Security Center allows operators to initiate, answer, forward, or cancel calls
  • Visual and audible call notifications ensure operators are instantly notified of incoming calls
  • The contact list, recent calls list, phone book, and dial pad facilitate how operators place calls
  • Create custom ring groups so that multiple operators receive incoming calls
  • Call reporting allows users to investigate comms activity and replay call sessions with associated video

Operator-to-Operator Video Calls

User-to-user video calls enhance teamwork as operators no longer need to use external communications applications/devices for both routine tasks and threat responses. Similar to video chatting, this features lets operators to initiate video calls with their Security Center client application as their security interface evolves into an IP soft phone (SIP client). This greatly simplifies video communications with colleagues and allows operators to share information and respond to any situation.

Available capabilities

  • Operators can establish either audio-only or video calls with their colleagues and coworkers
  • All video calls are placed within the Security Center unified user application, which eliminates the need for external apps altogether
  • Works with off-the-shelf equipment, including USB headsets and microphones
  • Optional call recording for future playback and review
  • When used with Task Sharing, your staff achieves even greater levels of awareness and collaboration
