Critical infrastructure security gets a power-up
Jemena is responsible for powering over 1.5 million Australian homes, businesses, and industrial customers. Learn how they upgraded their security to meet new regulatory standards, increase visibility across remote sites, and reduce carbon emissions.

The company
Jemena owns and manages more than $12.4 billion of major energy infrastructure across northern and eastern Australia. Its extensive electricity and gas networks deliver essential services to over 1.5 million homes, businesses, and industrial customers, making Jemena a critical player in powering communities and supporting Australia's energy future.
The challenge
Jemena was navigating an aging security infrastructure against a backdrop of tightening regulatory requirements. An initial assessment identified 50 key sites where legacy systems were unable to meet compliance obligations or provide the visibility required to effectively manage risk. Reliance on manual, on-site interventions was driving up operational costs and environmental impact, while limiting the efficiency of security operations. To address these challenges, Jemena sought to transition to a consolidated, modern security management platform that could deliver stronger compliance, greater operational visibility, and sustainable efficiency gains across its network.
The solution
Meeting new regulatory standards
The Security of Critical Infrastructure (SOCI) Act was recently reformed to increase compliance standards for critical infrastructure sites like Jemena’s. Adopting Security Center helped Jemena meet these new requirements.
Boosting remote site visibility
With a vast geographical footprint, Jemena understood that it could significantly reduce costs and carbon emission through remote, virtual site access.
Reducing carbon emissions
Running virtual patrols (instead of on-site patrols) helped Jemena take more vehicles off the road, reducing the company’s carbon emissions and broader environmental impact.
Scalable, federated site security
Jemena plans to continue investing in other Genetec™ solutions to improve the resilience of its security systems across critical infrastructure sites nationwide.

“Since transitioning to Security Center, the majority of our traditional patrols have now been replaced with virtual patrols, delivering a cost-benefit realisation of the capital investment we’ve made.”

Results
Jemena deploys Security Center across more than 50 corporate and operational facilities. The company’s security system integrates over 300 cameras and 40 SIP-enabled devices for intercom and public address, along with automatic license plate recognition technology. Jemena plans to expand this deployment significantly over the next five years and to further strengthen its security ecosystem by introducing Synergis™ access control and Genetec SaaS services
Implementing the Genetec unified security platform helped Jemena achieve key business outcomes. The company established a centralized security control room, reduced its operational expenditures by transitioning to virtual verification and monitoring services, enhanced its compliance and reporting capabilities, and enabled a proactive approach to managing critical infrastructure security.
