The company

Designed by Carbonleo, ROYALMOUNT is a next-generation Montreal destination where retail, dining, entertainment, public art, green spaces, and connectivity come together. With 170 retail establishments, including 60 restaurants and cafés, plus a pedestrian bridge directly connected to public transit, an urban park, and year-round cultural programming, ROYALMOUNT offers a diverse experience that requires smooth, safe, and scalable operations.

The challenge

The first phase of the ROYALMOUNT construction will span 10 to 15 years, making it difficult to define long-term security requirements from the outset. As the development evolved, ROYALMOUNT faced the challenge of securing key areas such as the pedestrian bridge, shopping center, and parking lots, while ensuring the approach could adapt alongside the site's changing needs.

How Genetec solutions provide scalability and a unified view

Visibility across the entire complex

The video surveillance system comprises approximately 530 individual cameras and nearly 1,700 feeds, providing comprehensive coverage of the shopping center, the walkway to the subway, and the parking lots. It enables efficient operations management through people counting, foot traffic detection, and site mapping. This overview simplifies the work of teams on the ground and improves access to information.

Managing access across 500+ doors

The access control system manages approximately 540 across all sites, of which are equipped with wired or wireless card readers. It enables centralized access management for tenants, maintenance teams, and other user groups, with access rights tailored to each group. Certain staff members can also access multiple buildings thanks to centralized cardholder management. Unified with video surveillance, the system facilitates rapid incident detection and helps coordinate response efforts.

Simplifying parking operations

Thanks to integrations with parking technology, the parking experience is fully automated. Genetec AutoVu™ automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) system and SharpV™ cameras scan license plates upon entry and exit. Connected parking systems identify if payment is required.

Resolving incidents faster

The native integration of the video management system (VMS) into a unified platform has significantly accelerated incident response. Teams can quickly track down vehicle thefts and vandalism in the parking lot using video search. Cases are resolved in minutes thanks to efficient information sharing with law enforcement, which makes it easier to identify those responsible.

"With the mapping feature in Security Center, investigating a person’s movements across the site now takes about eight minutes instead of 90 minutes, thanks to the ability to view movements directly on the map."

François Pelletier, Security Supervisor at Carbonleo

Results

ROYALMOUNT improved day-to-day operations by giving teams a unified view of the shopping complex. including retail areas, parking facilities, and transit connections. This has helped security teams respond to incidents faster and coordinate more effectively in a complex, evolving environment.

Training time for new operators has been reduced from several weeks to approximately four hours, helping teams become productive more quickly. Real-time visibility and faster access to information also support quicker investigations and more informed decision-making on site.
